The Pros and Cons of Broadband Internet Phone

Most people don't know that they already have everything they need to start saving money using internet telephony, or VoIP. All you have to have is a regular telephone and high-speed internet access. That's it! If you have both of those, you are ready to start saving loads of money on local and long distance phone calls.

It is inevitable that VOIP will replace traditional telephone service at some point. The only question is when should you jump in?

VOIP is quickly becoming more reliable and receiving wider acceptance. In fact, phone companies are already taking advantage of the technology to provide cheaper long distance rates. Like any emerging technology, however, there are kinks in the system that are still being worked out.

Advantages:

Internet Phone Service has numerous advantages over traditional telephone service. The most obvious is the cost benefits. If you have a high-speed internet connection, you can make phone calls from PC-to-PC anywhere in the world for FREE! More common PC-to-Phone calls usually come with a small charge but are still much cheaper than regular phone service.

For a small monthly fee, you can sign up with a VoIP service provider and get unlimited calls within the country! International calls can also be made for a fraction of the cost of regular service.

Another advantage is its portability. You can make and receive phone calls wherever there is a broadband connection by simply signing in to your VOIP account. This makes VOIP as convenient as e-mail. When you're traveling, you simply pack a headset or Internet phone; then you can talk to family or colleagues for next to nothing.

Phone-to-phone VOIP is also portable. Internet phones are small and light enough to take anywhere. When you sign up with a VOIP service provider, the Internet phone or adaptor used by that service is assigned a unique number. This 'phone number' remains valid, even if your VOIP service is in Los Angeles and you're connected to the Internet in London. When plugged into a broadband connection, anywhere in the world, you can make and receive calls as though you were at home.

Features like call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, caller ID and 3way-calling, are included with Internet telephone at no extra charge. While you're talking on the phone, you can send pictures and documents at the same time.

Disadvantages:

Unfortunately, there are a couple of minor drawbacks you may experience. The first is the fact that you would loose service during a power outage and the other is limited emergency calling.

Conventional phone service continues by the current supplied through the phone line during a blackout. This isn't possible with Internet phones. When the power goes, there goes VOIP service. Battery backups and power generators that provide electricity are the current solutions to this problem.

Emergency (911) calls are another concern for many potential customers as well. In the event that you need to call 911 but can't speak or have to leave, your call can be traced when dialed from a traditional phone. However, this is not the case with VoIP. Fortunately, there is currently technology being developed called 'e911' that will make this possible, so this will not be a problem for much longer.

VOIP also has sound quality and reliability problems. Data sent across the Internet usually arrives at its destination scrambled. E-mail and documents can be reassembled in the correct order when it arrives. Voice data also arrives scrambled, but it's more complicated because of the real-time nature of VOIP. Some data packets may have to be dropped when they don't arrive in time, in order to make voice connections with the least delay. This can cause brief silences in the audio stream.

Your internet connection speed and the distance of the call are the two biggest factors in the quality of the call. If you are in a high-traffic area this may also cause some loss in the quality of the conversation. Once again, technology is constantly being improved on and this is becoming less and less of an inconvenience.

While the disadvantages mentioned above currently present minor problems, it is expected that these will be corrected by the year 2008 and VoIP technology will have become the industry standard for telephone communication.

Broadband in Europe

According to a survey carried out across Europe, broadband usage has seen a rise of around 12% from statistics from 2006. The survey asked 150,000 households across Europe - with the exception of Malta - about their broadband habits. The survey showed that in the first three months of 2007, 54% of households had access to an internet connection, a rise from around 49% in 2006.

Results from the survey showed that around 42% of households in the EU now have access to a broadband connection. Percentages for households with access to the internet varied from country to country - from 19% in Bulgaria to 83% in the Netherlands.

Figures for the UK showed internet access had risen to around 67% - a rise of 4% compared to 2006 - and there has been a sharp rise in the percentage of broadband connections - rising to 57% from last year. With a number of broadband providers now on the market, consumers now have a wide choice of services available to them.

Whilst half of users had sent attachments with e-mails, around a quarter said they had used newsgroups, online discussions and chat rooms. One in ten of those surveyed had created their own web page, with a further 15% having used the internet for making phone calls.

The survey also showed details of the internet habits based on age and gender. The results showed that almost one-third of men over the age of 55 use the internet at least once a week - compared to less than a fifth for women. The results concluded that younger users are more likely to spend time on the internet.

However the results also showed that the numbers of internet users in the 55-to-74 age bracket has seen a rise and the numbers of women in that age gap using the internet - whilst still lower than those of men - has almost doubled in the past three years.

The Post Office has been a mainstay of the British community for as long as any of us can remember. While they may have their problems with postal strikes and the like, the GPO remains an institution looked upon fondly by many of us.

With the advent of the internet and email, one would think the Post Office would become almost obsolete, but that isn't the case. In fact, far from it. While the ordinary letter can now be sent via the internet, the soaring popularity of online shopping means that the GPO is inundated with parcels from all over the world every day.

And now, finally, the Post Office is realizing just what a commodity the internet is, and has jumped aboard. The familiar red and yellow logo can now be associated with broadband. And not just any broadband. The GPO has recognised something that so many other providers failed to; that not everybody can or wants to pay for their internet by direct debit.

Instead, Post Office customers can choose to pay for their broadband over the counter of their local branch - a tactic that is especially appealing to the 'silver surfers'; the over 50's who regularly use the net. Because many providers charge an extra fee if a bill is paid by anything other than direct debit, the Post Office's way is a boon for those who don't trust money coming out of their account, or who prefer to pay for bills as and when they arrive rather than on the same day each month.

Providers such as TalkTalk, who only offer one vague payment date per month - anytime between the 24th and 27th - and who charge a 3.50 per bill fee for credit card or postal order payments, may do well to follow the Post Office's example.

As well as the convenient payment methods, the Post Office also has the advantage of being a subsidiary of BT, meaning the availability of the broadband service is an unrivaled 95%, compared to the average 60% for other providers.

The only downside of the GPO broadband service is the low download limit on the standard tariff. 5MB per month is enough for most light users, but a heavier user may need far more than this. It is possible to get a good deal with a larger download limit if you shop around and compare deals from different providers. Decide what you want from your broadband and make your comparisons.

Whilst we all believe that satellites floating around the earth are responsible for the TV and the fact that we can watch the Superbowl in America all the way over the Atlantic in the UK the same cannot be said for the Internet. The Internet is run by an enormous network of copper and Fibre-Optic cables and in order for everyone to be able to connect to the Internet then there is some form of cabling infrastructure in place.

Many of these cables are submarine, in that they run under the water, they are well reinforced with up to nine layers of components to make sure these vital cables don't get disturbed. The problem is the cables running under the Mediterranean have recently become severed, initially one cable joining Egypt and Italy was broken but now a further two have been severed causing global problems, with Broadband Internet service disrupted in some Middle East countries such as Iran, India and Egypt.

The bigger concern was the disruption caused to telecommunications in these countries, especially India which as many people will know is home to thousands of outsourced call centres, BT was quick to re-route their network to deal with this disruption and reports say that although the telephone network quality isn't as clear as normal it is still workable.

The problem is that smaller companies with less comprehensive contingency plans are suffering; Vikas Jain, assistant vice president at AEZ Group, a real estate developer said, "We have a lot of offices connected by the net so because the internet is down means we are cut off from the head office,"

This problem is not the first of its kind, Broadband and other telecommunications in Taiwan were disrupted for months in 2006 after an earthquake managed to destroy 7 of 8 cables connecting to Mainland Asia. The repairs which were expected to last 10 days stretched out to months in order to get back up to speed. With the recent incident repair ships have been dispatched to repair cables before the situation worsens.

The reason for this disruption? Apparently the best guess is that a tanker had dragged its anchor along the sea bed. The repair time is likely to be a week from when the repair ships arrive, whilst the Minister of Communications and Information Technology for Egypt said the Broadband services in Egypt would be back up at 80% within 48 hours of the initial breakdown. Hopefully the World Wide Web will be back to strength soon!

Every day the phase 'mobile office' becomes more and more real for everyday business people. Technology advances at such a rapid pace, and week after week becomes more available for the small to medium business sector. No longer are high tech solutions only available for the blue chip companies. If you are a one man operation or a FTSE 100 company you should be installing new technologies on a regular basis, if you are not, then frankly you, should be. Any business owner knows that there are only three ways to improve your bottom line.

1) Increase revenue - By implementing marketing strategies, providing outstanding levels of service so that existing customers purchase from you time after time and refer you to the business contacts, and by employing professional sales people whose main objective is to service the customer needs. There are of course other ways of increasing revenue and we could go into different marketing strategies; however that is for another article.

2) Decrease costs - You don't need to be a mathematician to figure out that if you spend less you will have more money in the pot at the end of the year. There are so many areas where you can reduce costs but beware! Sometimes reducing expenditure can end up costing you more in the long run. I work in the Telecommunications industry so I will give you an example relevant to my experience. I was recently asked to help a local business that was having problems with their fixed line telephone supplier.

A few years ago this business was using a large company to supply their fixed line infrastructure and call billing. This large company was the market leader and was relatively expensive. The local business was approached by a small telecommunications company and were sold a product where they remain with the larger company for the infrastructure and switched to them for the call costs and billing, at a very good saving. Good business I hear you say, and it was at first. The problems started when the local business was having faults with the infrastructure (Lines) initially they called in a local engineer to test their telephone system; after many visits from the engineer and many dollars spent the conclusion was a fault was on the line. The small telecommunications company that were providing the billing was contacted; unfortunately they don't employ engineers as they are simply a billing company and don't get involved with the infrastructure.

The original provider was then contacted but the local business was informed that they could not help as they were no longer a customer and were told to contact the billing company. Around in circles they went. No such great business I hear you say now. Thankfully I was able to recommend a solution that met their needs for service and for cost. As I said earlier I am employed by a major telecommunications company in Australia as I am an expert in my field, and known for my attention to detail by establishing the needs of my clients and implementing solutions that fit. There have been occasions where I have recommended other companies that I am not affiliated with as they have an option that would better fit the needs of my clients. I still do business with these clients but in different areas. If you are approached by any company claiming to be able to save you money please ensure that they are fulfilling your needs NOT there own.

3) Improve efficiency - Implement strategies that will save you time and money, and introduce new technologies that enable you to perform more tasks in less time. This will enable your staff to have time to spend on rule number one - increase revenue.

Now we are familiar with how improving technologies in your business, in conjunction with your rate of growth will improve efficiency we can in turn improve your bottom line, by looking at a technology that will do just that no matter what size of business you are.

Why DSL or Digital Subscriber Line Is the Most Cost-Effective Broadband Internet Solution

When you connect to the Internet, you might connect through a regular modem (dial-up), through a local-area network (LAN) connection in your office, through a cable modem (Cable Internet) or through a Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) connection.

For me DSL connection is the most cost-effective solution that home based and small business office can leverage to grow a business. It is not only widely available but its reliability and high-speed capability is what it makes one of the most preferred access service.

DSL is a broadband high-speed connection that uses the same wires (2-wire) as a regular telephone line. Simultaneous use of voice and data (internet) one can log on to the internet while also using the line to make voice calls. The speed connection is much higher than a regular modem which can hit to a max of 56Kbps only. DSL can use existing phone line or delivered as stand-alone DSL connection. The company that offers DSL will usually provide the modem as part of the installation.

A drawback with DSL is that a DSL connection works better when you are closer to the provider's central office. The connection is faster for receiving data than it is for sending data over the Internet. The service is not available everywhere again owing to distance limitation.

All types of DSL service fall into one of two basic categories: symmetric and asymmetric. Symmetric types of DSL support the same bandwidth between the subscriber and the service provider in both directions.

Asymmetric types of DSL or ADSL support relatively more bandwidth in the downstream direction (from the service provider to the subscriber) and less bandwidth in the upstream (from the subscriber to the service provider). ADSL is popular among Internet Service Providers (ISP).

ADSL uses two pieces of equipment, one on the customer end and one at the Internet service provider which is usually telephone company or other provider of DSL services. At the customer's location there is a DSL transceiver also called Customer-Premise Equipment or CPE, which may also provide other services. The DSL service provider has a DSL Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) to receive customer connections.

A DSL Modem or CPE is like transceiver equipment, it transmit and receive data packets (information) over ordinary telephone cable. This data packets are actually digital signals but since digital signal cannot travel far, the DSLAM from the ISPs head end transform the signal from digital to analog signal for transmission over an analog channel (two-wire telephone cable) usually at a distance of up to 5Km from central office and the DSL Modem or CPE converts the signal back to digital. The DSL Modem is the equipment where data from the user's computer or network is connected to the DSL line. DSL Modem can connect to a customer's equipment in several ways, though most residential installation uses USB or 10 base-T Ethernet connections (RJ-45).

The DSLAM at the service provider is the equipment that really allows DSL to happen. A DSLAM is the point-of-contact where a dedicated, high-speed link to the internet called backhaul connection is terminated. An E1 (2048Kbps) or T1 (1536Kbps) Dedicated Internet is an example of a backhaul internet link that can be use to service between 80-100 DSL subscribers. DSL technology is the reason why internet connection is becoming cheaper by the days. It is able to share or distributed for greater use a dedicated connection (backhaul) to several subscribers while maintaining quality of service. Cost-of-service is significantly lowered.

The DSLAM takes connections from many DSL subscribers and aggregates them onto a single, high-capacity connection to the Internet. DSLAMs are flexible and able to support multiple types of DSL in a single central office, and different varieties of protocol and modulation. In addition, the DSLAM may provide additional functions including routing or dynamic IP address assignment for the customers.

ADSL is a distance-sensitive technology: as cable connection's length increases, the signal quality decreases and the connection speed goes down. Connection is much more stable the nearer the user is to the central office. With a maximum 18,000 Feet (5,640 meters) effective service length, some ADSL providers generally limit distance it serves to a max of 3.5Km. Beyond this some subscribers enjoy speeds below the promised maximums.

Bursting and Committed Information Rate (CIR) are two factors to consider in choosing a DSL service. Remember, DSL is a shared internet connection service depending on the port configuration or package variation of the service providers. Bursting is the term use to describe a service which does not guarantee a certain speed. Why Test Broadband Speeds?

Nowadays there is a proliferation of broadband speed tests on the internet. These have arisen in response to the growing difference between the speeds advertised by Internet Service Providers (ISP's) and the speeds actually received by consumers. More and more customers are finding that their speeds are far lower than what they are paying for and research by Moneysupermarket.com in 2007 showed that 44% of 43,000 customers were receiving only a pitiful HALF of the advertised speeds for their internet connections. This massive difference between advertised and received speeds has finally caught the attention of communication regulator OFCOM.

OFCOM has warned ISP's that they must be more transparent about the actual speeds consumers are receiving and there are calls from consumer panels to make ISP's contact customers within a fortnight of joining to inform them of their exact actual top speeds. OFCOM has also introduced, since Valentine's Day this year, important regulatory changes that give consumers freedom to switch ISP's if they are not happy with the service and speeds.

In the past ISP's could bully consumers into staying with them by charging them for changing providers and by creating delays that left consumers without a broadband connection for weeks, a situation that forces a lot of people to reluctantly remain with a provider they were unhappy with. Under OFCOM's new regulations, ISP's can no longer charge for switching to new providers. They must also ensure that the Migration Authorisation Code (MAC), the code which is given to customers to give to their new providers, is passed on within five days of the request. In the past ISP's would wait weeks before giving these codes to customers, in order to deter them from changing. Now under the new regulations consumers are protected from this practice.

These changes are part of what will be a continuing development of adequate regulatory standards that are needed for the booming broadband industry. As it becomes more integral to daily life, and bandwidth becomes more valuable, we will need to ensure that consumer rights are protected.

With these changes in mind, now is a really good time to do a test of your broadband speeds to ensure that you are getting what you are paying for, and that you CAN get what you are paying for. With many of the previous obstacles to changing providers removed, consumer freedom is far greater and worth taking advantage of to ensure you the best deal.

Virtual Private Networks - The Basics

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) can extend a local area network (LAN) over the Internet to remote networks and remote client machines. A VPN uses the Internet to route LAN traffic from one location to another by encapsulating the data inside encrypted IP packets. The encrypted packets are unreadable by intermediary Internet devices and can contain any kind of network communications - such as file and printer sharing, e-mail, remote procedure calls, and database access.

VPNs can be setup using server computers, firewalls or routers. Client access to the VPN can be made using client-side VPN software or by connecting to an ISP that supports the VPN protocol.

VPNs solve the problem of accessing private servers over the Internet through a combination of IP encapsulation, cryptographic authentication and data payload encryption.

IP Encapsulation
IP encapsulation provides a way to protect the data while in transit between the remote client and the private LAN. Computers outside the VPN should not be able to snoop on the traffic exchanged between the remote client and private server or be able to insert their own data into the communication stream. This is accomplished by creating what people refer to as a private and protected "tunnel" through the public Internet. When an IP packet contains another IP packet this is called IP encapsulation, and it provides a mechanism to refer to a host within a private network when a direct network connection may not exist. When this is combined with data encryption then we've effectively created our virtual tunnel.

Cryptographic Authentication
Cryptographic Authentication is used to securely validate the identity of the remote client so that the private LAN can determine what level of security should be applied to that user. VPNs use the authentication process to determine whether or not a remote user can participate in the encrypted tunnel, and for exchanging the public key that will subsequently be used for data encryption.

Data Payload Encryption
Data Payload Encryption uses a public key to encrypt the data field of the IP encapsulated packet. That is, data payload encryption is exactly like normal IP except that the data has been encrypted. It does not encrypt the header information, so details of the private network can be gleaned by analyzing the header information.

Advantages and Disadvantages
Compared to Wide Area Networks (WANs), VPNs offer some advantages but, also, present some disadvantages.

 Advantages - cheaper than WANs - easier to setup than WANs Disadvantages - slower than WANs - less reliable than WANs - less secure than isolated WANs

Example
Although there are a number of ways to configure a VPN here is an example of one scenario that is fairly common -- an employee wishes to work from home and exchange data between their home machine and a private web server on the corporate network. There are two important processes here -- the process of negotiating and building a VPN session, and the process of protecting and handling the data within an existing VPN connection. Here I'll briefly describe the latter and leave the former as a potential topic for a future article.

Suppose we have the following:
(a) a VPN client with a public IP address of 66.123.77.196 and a private IP address of 192.168.0.202 (provided by the corporation's DHCP server).
(b) a VPN server on the corporate network with two interfaces -- a public interface to the Internet that uses 168.156.192.75 and an interface to the private network with an IP of 192.168.0.101
(c) a web server on the corporate network with an IP address of 192.168.0.102

Prior to creating a VPN session the client host has one interface and a connection to the Internet through an ISP. The client machine can communicate with any host on the Internet but can not access the web server on the private network 192.168.0.X. After the VPN session has been created then the client host has 2 interfaces -- the original interface to the Internet and a new VPN interface. The new VPN interface becomes the default gateway -- that is, all packets will initially travel through the new interface. However, the VPN interface is not a physical network card -- it doesn't physically connect to anything. The VPN interface is used to encrypt and encapsulate packets that are subsequently sent as the payload of a new, outer packet. It is the outer packet that is sent out over the Internet (using the original interface) to the corporate VPN server.

The inner packet will use the client's private IP of 192.168.0.202 as the source IP address and the web server's private IP of 192.168.0.102 as the destination address. The VPN client encrypts the data field of the inner packet and this inner packet then becomes the payload of an outer packet. The outer packet uses the client's public IP of 66.123.77.196 as the source IP address and the public interface of the VPN server (168.156.192.75) as the destination IP. The IP encapsulated packet is then sent to the ISP and out over the Internet.

When the IP encapsulated packet reaches the VPN server at the edge of the private network it will unwrap the inner packet and decrypt its data field. Since the VPN server also has an interface to the private network it will then be able to forward the inner packet to the destination web server. When data is sent from the web server back to the client then the process is reversed -- that is, the VPN server handles the encryption/encapsulation and the VPN client is responsible for unwrapping/decoding.

It's often said that the older we get the more stuck in our ways we become. In fact, studies have shown that it's around the age of 35 when folks stop listening to new music or trying out new foods etc. However, this observation does not seem to apply with regards to alternative medicine and healing methods, and in particular Chinese herbal remedies. There's one thing that can't be argued about, and that is Chinese herbal remedies have been around a lot longer than all the stuff we see on the pharmaceutical shelves these days. In some cases, the Chinese have been using herbs to treat certain ills for 1000's of years. One of the main benefits of Chinese herbal healing over man made cures is that there's a much reduced risk of any harmful side affects. This has to be one of the major benefits that Chinese herbal remedies have over typical medications.

There is a bit of hocus pocus hype in some of it though and I can speak from personal experience here. I remember once I cut my toes in the Cameron Highlands in Malaysia. The fact of the matter is that millions of people around the world swear by Chinese herbal remedies which can be taken topically or internally for all manner of ills.
